Coal and ash handling, biomass feeding and dust control for thermal power plants — industrial conveying and filtration systems.

TL;DR

TMD GRUP energy sector solutions cover coal and ash handling, biomass feeding and dust control lines in thermal power plants. High temperature, abrasive material and 7/24 continuous operation are the fundamental challenges of energy facilities; TMD GRUP's belt conveyor, bucket elevator, screw conveyor, rotary feeder and bag filter portfolio is the engineering response to these challenges.

Bespoke engineering. Capacity, sizing and material selection are engineered for each project — TMD GRUP determines all parameters together with you during the quotation process.

Key Highlights

  • Full line solution from thermal power plant coal yard to boiler, and from boiler to ash silo.
  • Custom-designed feeders for biomass (waste wood, pellet, RDF) feed lines.
  • High-temperature-resistant bag-filter bags — boiler-outlet emission control.
  • Redundancy design for 7/24 continuous operation — non-stop production assurance.
  • ATEX-compliant coal-line equipment — safety in explosion-risk environments.
  • Environmental compliance — operation below the emission limits set by environmental regulations.

Thermal Power Plant Coal Line — From Yard to Boiler

In a classical thermal power plant, the coal flow line follows these steps: coal stockpile → pickup by reclaimer → belt conveyor line → pre-crusher (if needed) → boiler pre-bunker → milling station → main boiler feeder. Equipment selection is critical at every stage of this flow.

For the coal line, TMD GRUP offers the following products:

• TMD-BC belt conveyor lines from yard to boiler (1200-1800 mm).

• Bucket elevators at vertical transfer points (chain type, HB450 buckets).

• Screw conveyors from coal-mill outlet to main boiler-feed pipe.

• Rotary feeders as airlocks at boiler pre-bunker outlets.

• Slide-gate valves at routing points.

Ash Handling Line — From Boiler to Silo

The ash produced by coal combustion — fly ash and bottom ash — is the plant's second main material flow. Fly ash is collected at the outlet of the electrostatic precipitator or bag filter; bottom ash is collected under the boiler. Both must be transferred to silos, and from there to the discharge point or to the cement sector (fly ash).

For ash, the TMD GRUP solution offers:

• Pneumatic or mechanical handling — based on ash type and temperature.

• Rotary feeders — critical as airlocks at filter outlets.

• Screw conveyors — for near-horizontal ash transport.

• Airslide systems — for cooled fly ash (behaves like cement's cousin).

• Bag filters — secondary emission control for silo ventilation.

Biomass and Alternative Fuel Lines

Due to renewable energy and carbon-emission targets, more thermal power plants are starting to operate on biomass or RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel). These materials show different characteristics from coal: they are lighter, larger by volume, can have higher moisture content, and have more irregular particle sizes.

For biomass lines, TMD GRUP applies special designs:

• Wider belt conveyors — for volumetric capacity.

• Lower-speed screw conveyors — preventing physical degradation.

• Larger-open-end rotary feeders — for irregular particle size.

• Special pre-screens for filtering out waste rods and plastics.

• Vibratory feeders — for precise dosing with variable particle size.

In coal/biomass mixed lines, the ratio of the two materials can be dynamically adjusted via PLC control.

High Temperature and Emission Control

Thermal power plants are subject to the strictest emission regulations among industrial sectors. NOx, SOx, particulate matter and volatile organic compounds are regularly measured and limited. TMD GRUP bag-filter systems play a critical role in controlling particulate emissions:

• High-temperature-resistant (Aramid/Nomex) bags — for boiler-exhaust gases.

• PTFE-coated bags — for flue gases with aggressive chemistry.

• Anti-static (carbon-thread) bags — to prevent coal-dust explosions.

• Jet-pulse automatic cleaning — assurance of continuous operation.

Thanks to modular design, TMD GRUP filters can be expanded in parallel with the plant's capacity growth.

Redundancy Design for 7/24 Continuous Operation

Thermal power plants meet the basic base load of the electricity grid — so downtime is unacceptable. In TMD GRUP energy projects, redundancy is included as an engineering principle in the design:

• Dual-line design — main and backup belt/elevator at critical points.

• Spare motor and gearbox — kept on site ready to install.

• Bypass paths — partial continuation of production while equipment is taken offline.

• Quick-change parts — quick-add belt sections, modular buckets, rapid-disconnect valves.

This design approach prevents production stops outside of planned maintenance.

Renewable Energy Facilities — Hydro and Solar

TMD GRUP's engineering portfolio extends beyond thermal plants to renewable energy facilities:

• Hydroelectric plants — heavy-part handling during turbine hall construction, custom manufacturing for well-cleaning equipment.

• Solar power plants — custom conveyor solutions for module stacking and panel transport to site.

• Biogas facilities — fermentation tank feeding, fermented-waste handling.

Most of these projects fall under the custom engineering scope; they require more project-specific design than standard equipment.

Project Process and Long-Term Service

Energy-sector projects at TMD GRUP are executed in the following structure: pre-engineering and feasibility → equipment selection and detailed design → manufacturing (at our Başkent OSB facility, including NDT inspection) → in-house testing → site shipment → installation and commissioning (certified crew) → long-term spare-parts and technical-service agreement.

Thermal power plants typically operate for 25-40 years; therefore reliable support throughout the equipment's lifetime is critical. With IoT monitoring and preventive-maintenance contract structure, TMD GRUP remains an active partner throughout the plant's lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which equipment does TMD GRUP supply for thermal power plant coal lines?

TMD GRUP manufactures the entire handling line from coal yard to boiler for thermal power plants from a single source: TMD-BC belt conveyors (1200-1800 mm belt width), chain bucket elevators at vertical transfer points (HB450 buckets), screw conveyors from coal-mill outlet to the main boiler-feed pipe, rotary feeders as airlocks at boiler pre-bunker outlets, and slide-gate valves at routing points. Line design is done with redundancy in mind for 7/24 continuous operation.

Do you provide custom designs for biomass and waste-fuel (RDF) lines?

Yes — biomass (waste wood, pellet) and RDF lines have different characteristics from coal: lighter, more voluminous, can have higher moisture content, and more irregular particle sizes. For these materials we design wider belt conveyors, lower-speed screw conveyors, larger-open-end rotary feeders, and vibratory feeders for precise dosing. In coal/biomass mixed lines, the ratio of the two materials can be dynamically adjusted via PLC control.
